Prior to the Fall '94 season, the Fall & Spring competitions were played as one season,
and only one champion was declared. In addition, the top division was known as the "First
Division", as "Premier Division" didn't come into use until the Spring '95 season.
The CVSA throughout its history has conducted competitions in divisions
other than the Premier. In fact, up until the Spring '95 season the top
division was known as the "First Division", with "Premier Division" referring
to the CVSA's top division thereafter. From the Fall '75 season through
the Spring '94 season, the CVSA consisted of only the Premier and First
Divisions (then called "First" & "Second"). With the strong growth of soccer
both in central Virginia and nationwide, the CVSA grew, necessitating the
addition of a Second Division in Spring '96, and then a Third Division in
Fall '96. While participation in the Second & Third Divisions was sporadic
at first, the four-division format has been consistent since the Summer
'98 season. A Masters Division (30+) was attempted in '98-'99, but fell
apart due to apathy. A resurrection was accomplished in the Spring '03 season
and has been a constant feature in the CVSA ever since. In the Fall '06
season, another option was created when the Veterans Division (40+) was
created. The consistent growth of the CVSA has forced the establishment
of both the Fourth & Fifth Divisions in Summer '01. The Fourth Division
has been a staple ever since while the Fifth Division didn't become a standard
option until the Spring '05 season and was followed shortly thereafter by the
creation of the Sixth Division in Fall '06 and the Seventh Division in Spring '09. Also, a Coed Division was created as
an additional option for Summer League play in the Summer '01 season. The
success of the Summer Coed Divisions led the CVSA to make Coed a year-round
option in the Fall '04. Furthermore, interest in Coed play has led to
a 2nd Coed Division, as teams have been split into a Coed Competitive Division
and a Coed Recreational Division since the Fall '06 season. Further broadening
our horizons, a Women's Division was started in the Summer '06 season and
has been building ever since.
With the steady growth also came greater disparity in skill level. The CVSA
Cup had always been a random-drawn affair. The unappetizing prospect of
a lower Division team being drawn against a Premier Division team led to
(1) Premier Division teams receiving early-round byes, and (2) the creation
of the Copa Bruce. The Copa Bruce started for the 1999-'00 season
as an outlet for lesser-skilled teams to compete successfully in a cup format.
It is named for longtime CVSA President and Honorary Lifetime Member S.
Bruce Williams, as his foresight created this competition. Any team,
with the exception of a Premier Division team, losing their First Round,
Second Round, or Third Round CVSA Cup match was then relegated to the Copa Bruce.
Continued growth caused another foramt change in 2006-'07 Cup play where the
Copa Bruce field was reduced to only the final 16 teams eliminated from CVSA Cup
play.

Prior to the Fall '06 season, there was only one Coed Division. Since

Division".
